Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a grand spiral design spiral galaxy located 130 million light years in the constellation of Serpens at a declination of +17 degrees.  It is a magnitude 13 galaxy which spans 2.2 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 85,000 light years. From our view perspective, the disk is inclined about 20 degrees from edge-on.

IC objects are not often as spectacular as this one.

Despite the high disk inclination, a lot of detail is visible.  The core appears slightly barred.  The 2 strong arms exit at each end of the bar and extend clockwise around the core for 270 degrees.  Each arm becomes fragmented and diffuse near its end.  Blue star clouds are scattered throughout the outer disk, primarily on the lower left side.
